Orphan Care Sunday

In honor of Orphan Care Sunday, I’m joining in on #knittogetherbyadoption to share more of our story. Today’s topic is “FIRST STEPS”: This goes back to before Justin and I ever started dating. We had a class together in college and one of our first ever conversations was about adoption that was sparked by a photo I saw of his niece as his background on his laptop. I told him I loved the photo and then he shared her adoption story and about what adoption has meant to his family. The few months leading up to meeting Justin, God laid adoption SO SO heavily on my heart an told me that would be a part of my story someday. It was His way of preparing my heart to meet Justin and to share the same passions and desires that Justin had too. And when you connect with someone on a deep level like that, your hearts are drawn together emotionally and spiritually. I fell in love with him instantly after that first conversation. During summer of last year (2013) we started to talk and pray about the future of our family and what God was pressing on our hearts. Since day one, we knew adoption would be a part of our story in some way and felt God has called us to love the fatherless, the orphan, the least of these and to build our family through adoption. I really don’t like saying that “WE chose adoption” as a way of growing our family because then it makes it seem like it’s “our” works that are good…because really it was us responding to what The Lord had called us to and simply saying “YES” to his plans for our family and allowing him to work through us. Adoption is not something we have to do, it’s something we are BLESSED to do. It is a privilege to further the kingdom in this way. It has taught me more about Christ adopting us and his deep love for me. It has taught me about suffering and about joy and that everything about this life should be to serve The Kingdom and bring glory to our creator. It’s crazy to think that our first conversation we ever had together was about adoption and here we are 6 years later about to bring our first child home from Uganda. Our FIRST STEPS were simply saying YES to Jesus and his plans for us and his kingdom!
